Watagans National Park The Watagans National Park is home to waterfalls, spectacular rainforest gullies, bushwalking trails and more. Activities include bushwalking amongst gorgeous Illawarra flame trees, picnicking and admiring breathtaking views of the Hunter Valley and coastline. Wallarah National Park Home to sugar gliders, echidnas, white-bellied sea eagles and more, this superb pocket of coastal bushland features several walking trails, a cycle path and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Glenrock State Conservation Area Glenrock protects the last surviving pocket of coastal rainforest in the region and is home to a bandicoots, bats and gliders. It also safeguards a number of ancient Aboriginal sites and remnants of the area’s coal mining history. A great place for walking, mountain biking, horse riding and surfing. Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area The Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area consists of seven different parcels of land situated on the lake’s foreshore. Each area offers short walking trails and some have waterfront picnic spots. Belmont Wetlands State Park Activities abound in Belmont Wetlands State Park, with walking, cycling, mountain biking, birdwatching and more all on offer. The park is home to a rich and varied natural environment. Encounter ecologically diverse wetlands, tranquil native bushland and impressive sand dune systems on your visit. With over 4km of beachfront, one of the most popular things to do in the park is 4wdriving on Nine Mile Beach. This requires a permit that can be purchased online and from selected local retailers.
Awabakal Nature Reserve There’s plenty to see and do in this lovely area of coastal bushland located between Dudley and Redhead. With bush tracks leading to stunning lookouts, there’s great whale watching potential during winter. In spring, the reserve comes alive with the colours of countless native wildflowers. Green Point Foreshore Reserve Green Point Foreshore is one of Lake Macquarie’s most beloved natural attractions. Its popular paved pathway follows a clear sand and pebble beach along the foreshore, leading to a grassy picnic area with free electric barbecues, shelters and amenities. Pulbah Island is one of Lake Macquarie’s iconic natural landmarks and the largest island in the Lake. Pulbah is of great spiritual significance to the local indigenous Awabakal people, and makes a great day out when hiring a boat. There are numerous bush tracks and secluded picnic areas to discover.
